Light and Dark

the black and white figures represent the “dark” and “light” facets of the human psyche. the figures are also holding their hands out as a symbol of the oneness and balance between the two. however, there is a gap between their hands indicating that the human process of uniting these two is an endless one and may also never meet in a lifetime.

further, the details of the painting suggests that the figures are feminine, an ode to the painter’s sense of self as a person. also, they are set against a background of a blue sky and clouds increasingly getting darker the higher they go as suggested by the gradient. this indicates that the more we get in touch with both facets of ourselves, the deeper and more genuinely we get to know what makes us “ourselves”. this journey may often feel difficult and intimidating, symbolized by the darker shades of blue.
